Sativa strains are traditionally more of a stimulant, and are quite often effective in appetite stimulation, relieving depression, migraines, chronic pain and nausea.  Sativas have a higher level of THC than indicas, which typically results in a psychoactive and energetic mind-high. This is one of the reasons many patients find sativas to be good medication for the “shoulders up” including eyes, face, jaws and neck. Because sativa strains may cause feelings of alertness and optimism, many patients prefer to medicate with this type of cannabis during the day.  However, many sativa strains produce an after-effect or “come down” that acts like a sedative or exhausted state so that patients may plan ahead to prepare for rest or a night’s sleep.
